About Our Farm

Welcome to B & R Limousin Farms, we are a small family-run cow-calf to finish operation in Decker, Michigan. Our herd stems from Rachel's parents, Larry & Patty Miller's, commercial herd that we purchased in 2015. The Miller's ran registered Limousin bulls on their commercial cow-calf to finish beef herd since 2000. Their passion for the Limousin breed started with the purchase of their first Fullblood Limousin bull ROMZ Jocko 82J in 1999. Crossing Jocko on their crossbred, mostly Hereford and black baldy, cows instantly brought massive muscle and a huge increase in yield of tender lean beef. Their custom beef clients instantly noticed on average a 5-10% increase in yield, improved tenderness and heavier carcass weights. The increase in yield and tenderness is due to the F94L myostatin which is found in most Fullblood and purebred Limousin cattle. The F94L gene is also commonly called the "Limousin muscling", "profit", or "tenderness" gene and has no negative effects in fertility or calving ease that is seen in the true double muscling gene variations in other breeds. The Limousin breed is known as the "butcher's' breed" for these reasons. Jocko's daughters were also long bodied, docile, fertile and lasted into their teen years which was a big boost in the herd longevity at that time. With their custom beef customers approval, higher carcass weights, and improved longevity in the cow herd, the Miller's decided that Limousin was the breed they were sticking with.

We continue to produce high-quality Limousin beef for our custom beef customers and selectively breed for the F94L gene in our breeding stock. We strive to produce cattle that look and preform like tradition Limousin cattle should; with muscle, length of body, feed efficiency, fertility, longevity, and docility. While continuing to improve on areas like growth, fleshing, milk, depth and marbling.

Over the last few years, we have been growing our registered herd and traveling the country selecting bulls from some of the top seedstock operations to produce registered breeding stock. A few bulls each year are offered first come first serve as yearlings after the pass their breeding soundness exams around June at around 12-14 months. Since we finish most of our calves, we rigorously cull bull prospects and only leave the top performers from our top cows intact after weaning. Temperament is a big factor in our culling, average isn't good enough for us, we want bulls easy to work with in a group or singled out no matter the situation. That is also one of major reason behind not selling any bulls until after a year old, we want to see how hormones affect their temperament. By mid-late winter after being worked through the chute a few times and with a few months on feed we have made most of our culling decisions. If you are interest in our bull prospects, February - April is great time to contact us to schedule a visit (weather permitting of course). Bulls can be reserved at that time, and delivery can be arranged after bulls pass breeding soundness exams.
